Mastering Diagnostics #17: Topology

Oct. 4, 2024
In this episode of Mastering Diagnostics, Motor Age Technical Editor Brandon Steckler demonstrates how to leverage the power of scan tool topology to help triangulate the location of a data communication network fault.

Computer networking saves time and money when it comes to designing and assembling vehicles. But when it comes to diagnosis, many technicians hang themselves out to dry. With more than 100 computers networked on some of the vehicles today, it’s no wonder the struggle is real. “You don’t stand a chance when it comes to efficient network fault diagnosis. That is, of course, unless you have a game plan,” Brandon offers.

Leveraging the power of the Bosch ADS 625X scan tool and its topological graphing capabilities, Brandon shows how preliminary scan tool analysis can be conducted right from the driver’s seat and without any previous disassembly. This streamlined approach to network diagnosis will allow the diagnostician to eliminate potential fault locations by simply analyzing the topology displayed on the scan tool screen and determining which nodes (and on which networks) are communicating.

Proper testing allows diagnosticians to be accurate. Learning what NOT to test is how to stay efficient. Put the diagnostic power back in your favor and learn to utilize topological graphing capabilities in your next approach to a network fault diagnosis.
